This is a very interesting idea, that different people can bond over seeing the same video. However, I'm not sure whether this is actually a beneficial thing or not. Admittedly, it does allow people to bond, but I also noticed that, at the beginning, everyone was sitting around together, but they were all on their laptops, not communicating with the people around them.
Even though it may allow them to have shared experiences, those shared experiences are kind of meaningless. Youtube might create a shared culture, but it is one that is mostly comprised of funny/meaningless videos.
Personally I don't think they are meaningless. Sure half the videos on youtube are silly and have no meaning by themselves, the shared experience creates a connection that I wouldn't say has no meaning. This also doesn't consider videos that aren't themselves meaningless. Take the "It Gets Better" Project. People made a concrete connection through youtube that encourages teens.
